Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers on Friday asked a federal judge in Florida to schedule his criminal trial over the retention of classified documents until after the November presidential election, saying it would be “unfair” to do so sooner.
According to NBC News, Trump’s lawyers at a hearing called prosecutors’ new proposal to begin the trial on July 8 “completely unworkable” and “an impossibility” for Trump, who is the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.
Defense attorneys noted that Trump, who attended the Fort Pierce court hearing, is scheduled to be tried in New York state court as early as March 25 on charges of falsifying business records in connection with a hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels .
Lawyers for Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, who is prosecuting Trump, argued to Judge Aileen Cannon that the former president has known about the date of the hush-money trial for months but is only now asking for a lengthy delay in the Florida case.

Cannon ended the hearing Friday afternoon without making a decision on the trial date.
Trump is accused in the Florida case of keeping confidential documents after he left the White House in January 2021 and obstructing government officials’ efforts to recover those documents, which were kept at his private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach were kept.
He has pleaded not guilty.
