President Joe Biden has won the Democratic primary in South Carolina, NBC News reports.

Running against Biden were House Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and self-help author and 2020 Democratic nominee Marianne Williamson.

“In 2020, it was South Carolina voters who proved the experts wrong, breathed new life into our campaign and put us on the path to winning the presidency,” Biden said in a statement after the results.

“Now, in 2024, the people of South Carolina have spoken again, and I have no doubt that you have put us on the path to winning the presidency again — and making Donald Trump the loser again.”

The state’s Republican presidential primary is February 24. The former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, is running against former President Donald Trump.

Democrats will award 55 delegates on a pro rata basis based on the results of Saturday’s primary. The party’s final nominee will need a total of 1,968 delegates statewide to secure the nomination.

Biden’s victory was widely expected given his incumbency advantage and his sizable lead in the polls before Election Day.

The president also has a track record of success in the Palmetto State’s Democratic primaries: His victory in this year’s 2020 primary paved his way to the nomination.

Results are not yet in, but the final tally will give the Biden campaign and the Democratic Party the first ballot-box indicator of how well the president is doing in key Democratic constituencies.

It will also give his campaign a boost as he heads to the next contest in Nevada on Tuesday, where 36 delegates are up for grabs. A campaign event is planned for the president in Las Vegas on Sunday.

South Carolina has open primaries, meaning any registered voter in the state is allowed to vote in either party’s primary.

In the past, New Hampshire hosted its first Democratic primary. But the Democratic National Committee changed the official order under Biden’s leadership.

The president did not win the 2020 Democratic primary in New Hampshire. But he won

The DNC argued that South Carolina’s demographic diversity was more representative of the Democratic Party than New Hampshire’s, making the state more accurately reflect the state of a campaign.
