President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign released a new digital ad Monday targeting Donald Trump for comments he made to CNBC about cutting government programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
The Biden campaign gave CNBC a first look at the new 20-second ad highlighting Trump’s statement on “Squawk Box,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee expected to face Biden in the November election.
The ad will be published on Biden’s social media accounts X, Facebook, Instagram and Threads, the campaign said.
In Monday’s interview, CNBC host Joe Kernen asked Trump if he had changed his “attitude on handling claims: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.”
Kernen’s question was based on concerns that, if left uncut, these programs would further fuel the rise of the U.S. national debt.
Trump responded: “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements – in terms of cutting – and also in terms of theft and mismanagement of entitlements.”
The Biden campaign, highlighting this response, ends with footage from the president’s State of the Union address on Thursday, in which he said: “If anyone here tries to cut Social Security, Medicare or raise the retirement age, I will be you.” prevent it.”
The ad was part of a series of responses from Biden and his campaign to Trump’s interview, which they then used as an opportunity to attack the Republican for proposing cuts to programs that benefit more than 150 million Americans, including many older voters.
Biden’s campaign first tweeted footage from the Trump interview and Biden’s official X account, then responded with a report that said, “Not on my watch.”
Biden said during a campaign event later Monday in New Hampshire: “Even this morning, Donald Trump said cuts to Social Security and Medicare are back on the table.”
“The bottom line is he’s still at it,” Biden said. “I will never allow that. I will not cut Social Security. I’m not going to cut health insurance.”
White House spokesman Andrew Bates issued a separate statement highlighting the president’s promise to protect the program.
Trump’s team, meanwhile, spent Monday explaining his comments on “Squawk Box.”
“If you losers didn’t shorten his answer, you would know that President Trump has talked about reducing waste,” the Trump campaign said in a tweet in response to the Biden campaign’s post featuring a video of the former president.
