The social media platform X on Tuesday restored the account of Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, after a brief suspension.
X, formerly Twitter, said the site’s defense mechanism against manipulation and spam had “incorrectly flagged” Navalnaya’s account as violating the rules.
“We unbanned the account as soon as we became aware of the error and will update the defense,” X Safety said in a post on Tuesday.
Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation had previously tagged Elon Musk in a post to ask “exactly which rules were violated by Navalny.” Reports from Navalny’s allies, such as spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh, seemed unaffected.
Navalny, 47, was a well-known and vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He died on Friday in an Arctic penal colony where he had been serving a 19-year sentence.
The news sparked international outrage, with many political leaders blaming Putin for the anti-corruption activist’s death. Navalnaya said on Monday she believed her husband was killed by Putin and vowed to continue his work fighting for a free Russia.
Before her account was temporarily blocked, Navalnaya posted a video message in which she accused Putin of being responsible for her husband’s death and called on Russian citizens to rally around her in the fight for a free country.
The Kremlin has denied these allegations. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the political leadership’s reaction as “self-exposure” because there has not yet been a forensic medical examination.
Russia said on Monday that an investigation into Navalny’s death was underway and stressed that “all necessary measures are being taken.”
